Congratulations to Dr. Lin Duan and Dr. Sarah Eom!

November 5, 2025 | Two PhD students defended their dissertations this week

This week, two Duke I3T Lab PhD students successfully defended their dissertations. 

Dr. Lin Duan's dissertation titled "Adaptive, Context-Aware Assessment and Guidance for Augmented Reality" focused on advancing a number of edge AI tools and methods for next-generation AR. Her work appeared in IEEE ICRA, NeurIPS, and ACM/IEEE IPSN, among others. Her research was recognized with the 2023 Best Poster Runner-Up Award of the NSF AI ATHENA Institute Annual Review meeting and the 2024 ACM/IEEE IPSN Best Research Artifact Runner-up Award. 

Dr. Sarah Eom's dissertation titled "Extended Reality in Medical Applications: From Surgical Guidance to Patient Rehabilitation" pushed forward an ambitious agenda centered on XR in healthcare applications. Her work appeared in IEEE TVCG, IEEE ISMAR, and ACM IMWUT, as well as in core venues of her healthcare collaborators such as Neurosurgical Focus and ARVO. Sarah's work has been featured in a wide range of Duke University publications including Duke I/O Magazine and Duke Eye Center Vision Magazine.
